Another cracking night at the Queen of Spades, Boston, where the Boston Original Bands Initiative are working hard to get a range of bands from across many genres to come and play our town. An appreciative crowd and a positive atmosphere. Great stuff.

Opener was local star ALICE KAT and her wonderful acoustic antics. On record, Alice plays a hyper tuneful take on 90s pop, rock and indie that reminds me, at various times, of Velocity Girl, Lush or Cheerbleederz though never really sounding fully like any of those bands. Live however, I've only ever seen acoustic solo performances and yet again, Alice wowed the crowd with a solo set, chock full with wonderful ditties of introspection and heartfelt lyrics. The crowd absolutely loved it and the CDs were flying off the shelf afterwards! "Around The World And Back To You" is out now - investigate if you long for freewheeling 90s pop/indie frolics. There were even calls for an encore, to which Alice duly obliged. First act on getting an encore! Cripes.

Next up were Fosdyke duo HEDGEHOG REALITY with their peculiar blend of bedsit pop much to the delight of the now growing crowd. A difficult band to "file under," Terry and Liz's output has recently been likened to Vaselines or BMX Bandits or even Television Personalities in their approach ... whatever. Another set of Hedgehog hi jinks went down well.

Third on the bill were another duo, if you don't count the mannequin on drums. Lincoln's Electro Goth Punks ONLY DESTINY blasted through a hedonistic blend of early Depeche Mode playing 90s Skate Punk. Doesn't sound quite right does it? Well, fear not for it was absolutely brilliant and the ever swelling crowd were well up for it and even had a few hecklers! In Boston! Fancy that.

Finally, Sleaford youngsters CHEKHOV'S GUN took top billing and at last, some dance floor action! Plenty of jumping about and what have you as they raced through a mix of their own numbers that harkened back to the early 90s Grunge era with a bit of Gothic darkness, plus the odd cover from that very era. Bonus points for a relatively obscure Rage Against The Machine track. The CHEKHOV'S get better every time I see them. Great to see that their own material is cropping up more and more in the set list along with the homages to their influences.

So there we go, a proper mix of styles and another great night for BOBI supporting local and original bands at the Queen of Spades. See you at the next one?
