Another successful night for the Boston Original Bands Initiative with another mixed bill of original music from a most eclectic mix or performers.
Kicking off the evening was the gentle sound of MATTHEW AYLETT. Strumming on his acoustic guitar, Matthew’s tunes are very much rooted in Americana and Blues with a laid back, maudlin feel. A very Autumnal sounding set that brings to mind the likes of Bob Dylan, but not without an indie sensibility. Maybe a bit of Phosphorescent in there too, not to mention a cheeky Only Fools and Horses singalong. Excellent start. Free CDs given out on the door will be spinning in many a home this afternoon I imagine when the hangovers clear.
Next up was LOOP CYCLE, a one man act that combines beatboxing that is recorded and looped, whilst all manner of other effects and guitar playing are all juggled with a pedal board that looks like something off Blakes 7! A highly original live looping Cyber Punk performance, the likes of which you don’t see very often in these parts. Or any parts for that matter.
BAT FLATTERY, from down the road in Lincoln, are a band we do see pretty often and that’s a good thing as they just get better every time. Taking Post Hardcore as a starting point – Fugazi, At The Drive In – they are developing in to a most unique, not to mention powerful, trio these days. The latest singles “Onibaba Mask” and “Kalshnikov” were all given an airing as were other new tracks that will no doubt be released in to the wild soon. I got the impression that the new material is taking the ‘Flattery down a grittier avenue, a couple in particular sounding right gnarly. A great set that combined plenty of soaring choruses with intense and frenzied wig outs. Always a pleasure to catch these lads live.
Final act of the night were, not unlike BAT FLATTERY, coming from a place of Post Punk/Hardcore, yet TELEVISED MIND throw something of an indie rock feel in to the mix. Like a tough, boot in the face modern day Post Punk sound with a nod to 90s Student Night anthems. They even chucked in a cheeky “supersonic” cover version to underline that … By now the crowd were getting a little excitable and much ale had flowed, so the inevitable round of horseplay went down to the rousing sounds of TELEVISED MIND. A cracking set was accompanied by human pyramids and people shouting “sausages” amongst other silliness. Fenpunk pandemonium at it’s finest. What a night!
These monthly BOBI gigs at the Queen of Spades are taking off … see you at the next one?
